Trevor's Photo Journal

They say a pictures worth a 1000 words. So here's 365,000 words worth.

For the last year of my Peace Corps Service I'll be posting a photo a day. The only rule is that I have to take the photo that day and do my best to post the same day.

Day 300: April 26

2011-04-26300

A puppy is a pretty uncontroversial pick for my three hundredth day. Doesn't really seem that significant - expect as a stark reminder that my time here is coming to a quick end. She's already to scared of people to let me come anywhere close enough to pet - so this picture will have to do.

Day 299: April 25

2011-04-25299

The day after Easter also happens to be a national holiday in South Africa.  Great day to be a kid and go pick some ripe guava off the neighbors tree.  Wait, did I say ripe guava? Those never actually exist on my street since the kids will pick them one to two weeks early.  A case of the early kid getting the crunchy guava and no one getting a ripe on.

Day 298: April 24

2011-04-24298

Sorry for the bas quality, only had my camera phone on me as I passed this truck load of people going to church on Easter Sunday.  On the sharp turns I sure hope they coordinate group hugs.

Day 297: April 23

2011-04-23297

It's universal: babies create messes like dung beetles swarming to an elephant's toilet. However here this baby's cloths will end up being hand washed not thrown in a machine; which always makes me wonder why mothers will change kids cloths three times in one day here - seems to just create needless work.

Day 296: April 22

2011-04-22296

Because of Easter it's a four day and to add to the holiday Wednesday the 27th is Freedom day to commemorate the first free elections in 1994.  So South Africa is on one major holiday. These are the lines at the taxi rank towards Mozambique today - to most volunteers lines at taxi ranks sound as unusual as good food in the school cafeteria.  Normally when you show up to a taxi rank your left waiting until the taxi fills up. Today the rank mangers can't get taxis free fast enough.

Day 295: April 21

2011-04-21295

Don't know where this Quantum went - but I wish I was with them.  These things aren't meant for off roading - I can just imagine it bush-whacking through Krugar being chased by some Elephants.

Day 294: April 20

2011-04-20294

Again from Kanyamazane - the exact same ANC mural can be found in my township.

Day 293: April 19

2011-04-19293a

I went to the Kanyamazane EDC, just outside of Nelspruit, with my supervisor for a meeting today.  In the entrance to the township they the 2010 World Cup sign still advertises the Chile vs New Zealand game.

Day 292: April 18

In Sabie a few weeks back I bought a pair of juggling sticks and try to practice about half an hour each day.  The kids always want to play to, and although they can't do more than just one or two seconds they show great determination; but, then new toys are always fun aren't they.

Day 291: April 17

2011-04-17291

This evening I was biking past one of the high schools when a taxi full of highly excited learners pulled up.  They had just returned from a singing competition with a first place trophy.  It took them about 10 min just to organize for this picture because everyone was jumping up and down and randomly breaking out into song.
